Keep Overhead

Above you, the wing will pitch, roll and yaw.

Use your feet and brakes to stay below the wing.

If it gets too easy try different wind conditions.

Success: 1 min up

Wing: BGD | Seed | 14m2

Wind: 30 km/h | strong turbulence | no lift

Very strong winds and strong turbulence.

Only noticed after all said and done that I kept A2 up for 30 seconds rather than 1 minute. My bad!

Ground Handling Challenge task A02. Keep the wing overhead. Success is 1 minute aloft, 3 times in a row. My instructor is big on 'active' kiting. Don't be content to fly the wing quietly overhead, but rather keep moving, disturb and recover.

Low stance, big feet/small brakes.

After two weeks of storms and bad weather we've finally had a great day here in the Peak District. A lot of good pilots say that you learn more in an hour groundhandling than in an hour flying. If you do it enough you can just feel what you wing in going instead of looking at it.

I've always wondered what would happen if a glider had really long lines or really short ones, or you only had half a wing, or two wings? Well finally I got round to testing the short paraglider idea. I took a very old "ground handling only" paraglider I had laying around and I crudely shortened the lines.
